Both Alpine drivers penalised

NEWS STORY

Post-race penalties see Pierre Gasly and Franco Colapinto drop out of the points.

Colapinto was alleged to have passed through a single yellow flag sector and not make the required reduction in speed, while Gasly was alleged to have passed through a double yellow flag sector and not make the required reduction.

In both cases the drivers and team presented telemetry and photographic evidence claiming it demonstrated that they had complied with the regulations which state that a driver must reduce speed and be prepared to change direction.

Detailed examination of the telemetry and on-board cameras failed to satisfy the stewards that Colapinto had sufficiently reduced speed through that single yellow sector. In relation to the previous double yellow flag sector the stewards determined that there was sufficient doubt that the driver had sufficient warning in order to comply with the requirements, so did not determine that there was any breach in relation to that sector.

In Gasly's case, the driver and his team representative claimed that he had made a significant reduction in speed in the double yellow flag sector, however a detailed examination of the telemetry and that of other cars passing through that sector, led the stewards to conclude that the small reduction noted was not sufficient to satisfy the requirements of the regulations.

Colapinto had a 10 second time penalty imposed and 1 penalty point, while Gasly was given a stop and go penalty, which converts to 30 seconds, and 2 penalty points.

This demoted Colapinto from 7th to 15th and Gasly from 9th to 17th.

Ironically, on his F1 debut, it promoted Ryo Hirakawa to tenth.
